Who Was Queen Liliʻuokalani?
What is the importance of Kuleana? How does the amount of Kuleana differ throughout the generations? How far does an Aliʻi go to help others? Let’s start off with the Hawaiian people. Hawaiian people are those who make up the Hawaiian culture. Throughout the many years, all generations had responsibilities of their own. The keiki, ʻopio, mākua, kūpuna all have Kuleana. The Aliʻi, the highest class, has the biggest amount of responsibility because of the many people they have to take care of. Liliʻuokalani as our Aliʻiwahine fulfilled her Kuleana to improve the lives of Hawaiians.
Queen Liliʻuokalani fulfilled her Kuleana because she surrendered during the overthrow. This is an example of how she fulfilled her Kuleana because she didn’t want her people to get hurt. This improved the lives of Hawaiians because the safety of her people was important for her as an Aliʻiwahine. While everyone was going through the overthrow, this situation has brought the Hawaiian people closer together. Through this, they have experienced and witnessed the event that affected many lives. They knew that their Queen had to do what she had to do in order to perpetuate the lāhui. Knowing that our Queen has done so much, we should be extremely grateful for everything. She wanted to keep all of us safe and not have war between the Hawaiian people and Americans. Another way she fulfilled her Kuleana as our Aliʻiwahine was helping out with children. She helped out with children by establishing schools. She also helped out by having trust funds sent to orphanages to take care of the children in need. She gave money to schools so that they can get school supplies for the children that can’t afford. These are examples of how she fulfilled her Kuleana because she helped those in need. She took great care of her people when they need it. If someone was in need, she was there to help out She helped keiki through kūpuna.
Liliʻuokalani as our Aliʻiwahine fulfilled her Kuleana to improve the lives of Hawaiians. If we didn’t have Queen Liliʻuokalani to take care of us when King Kalākaua passed away, we wouldn’t be able to get through the overthrow safely. The safety of Hawaiian people was an important part of Queen Liliʻuokalani’s time as our ruler. She would do anything, even risk her own life, to make sure that everyone is taken care of and is in good hands, even if it means stepping down from her own throne.
